| Polyphony 7: The Update with extra honesty |
| Public |
|
We are at just over half the number of preorders I said I wanted in order to proceed (225 was the magic number).
Given that I first posted this announcement and plea back in November, this is pretty pathetic no matter how bad the economy is.
The numbers that keep floating around in my head are the following:
During a typical submission period of 45 days we receive 650 submissions. During a last gasp desperation sales period of over three months, we received fewer than one fourth that many orders.
Yeah, Polyphony attracts four times as many writers as readers.
I'm inclined to pull the plug.
But, I will give it until Friday night.

Sad. If we weren't so broke, I'd buy multiples, but all I can do is spread the word and pre-order one.

A study a couple of years ago showed that more people wrote poetry than read it. Which would seem to imply that some people are not reading their own work. Of course, anybody who deals with slush on a regular basis knew that already.

I sadly agree. Ask for stories and folks come out of the woodwork from every corner. Ask for a few bucks and everyone heads in the other direction. I have to say that getting over 100 pre-orders is a pretty fine achievement (the only time I've had double figure preorders is with TP's most recent, because a contributor wanted 10 copies).
Sadly I don't have answers, just empathy and support.

Question, at the risk of being rude....
I've pre-ordered the physical copy. Is it possible to pay more money for another copy, even at full physical copy price, but this time a digital one?
It's okay, and I understand, if the answer is "no".

Not a rude question at all. I wish I could give a definitive answer. At WFC I talked to several people about how to do an eBook or digital copy of some sort. Given the uncertain future of WP, I haven't given the matter a whole lot of thought.
It would actually require more money on my part to produce a digital version, so right now it looks unlikely.

More money for digital rights, or more money for production? I ask because we've been doing some transforming to e-books recently, using Smashwords, and if it's just production that's standing in your way, I'd be willing to assist with time and skill... :)

Not sure how; I must have been living in a hole. *goes to look up how to place preorders*

(And preordered 3 copies, cause that's how many I know people in my neck of the woods need. Will signal boost too!)

Very disappointing news, but I'm glad you're giving it a couple more days. And I know that you asked us contributors not to buy copies of P7, but you didn't say anything about the other volumes :-j I just ordered P1-P6, and greatly look forward to having them in my book collection again. I've posted my thoughts at LundBlog: Beautiful Letters.

I'm also fairly encouraged by the numbers of pre-orders, particularly given that they were made with no assurance that the book would be published. I'm following Jason's example and picking up the Polyphony set. I have some but not all, had been thinking of doing this anyway, but also hope you will take it into account as support for the overall continuance of Polyphony.--Eric
